The strength of delicacy
The restoration of Guercino’s “Guardian Angel” required a targeted approach to halt the deterioration and restore the work to its original beauty. The priority was stabilizing the paint layer, followed by thorough cleaning and a transparent lining to ensure structural stability.
- The transparent glaze:
- played a key role in blocking color loss while preserving the original color appearance.
- Cleaning:
- was carried out in an aqueous environment using specific emulsions: first, a hypertonic emulsion to remove the film-forming layer, followed by an isotonic emulsion to gently clean the paint layer.
- The transparent lining:
- made with a foam adhesive, it helped stabilize the work without altering its lightness.
This restoration allowed us to showcase Guercino’s technique while respecting the painting’s historical and artistic integrity. Thanks to the integration of traditional and innovative techniques, the project represents an example of excellence in conservation.
